Amelia Peabody accepts that she is not a fashionable female and will never have a romance but that is okay with her. After the death of her father she takes her small fortune and travels to Egypt to learn more of the beginning stages of archeology. Once there she takes in a young English woman as a companion and she and Evelyn set off on the Nile.
The first of many novels in a series, the parody of early adventure and romance books from the late 1800s and early 1900s hits just the right tone. Fast paced, full of sarcasm and humor and the requisite adventure.
Review of books from a wide variety of styles including fantasy, my personal favorite, Southern fiction, mystery, young adult and even the occasional non-fiction selection. I will even read the back of the cereal box but I promise not to review that.

Dead as a Doornail by Charlaine Harris
Sam is shot, along with several others of the two natured so Sam ask Sookie to request a favor of a bartender/bouncer while he recuperates. The new vamp, Charles, ends up staying at Sookie's house.
Jason has started turning furry at the full moon, Eric has questions and Bill is back in town and jealous. Add in Tart and a very dominating vamp and Sookie has about more than she can handle.
Fast paced and quite good.

Elizabeth Perers "He Shall Thunder in the Sky"
Another season in Egypt but this time David is in jail, Ramses is a spy, Nefret is trying not to let The Family know how much she knows and of course Evelyn and Emerson think they know all.
The start of WWI tears old friends apart and causes social upheaval. The archeological quest goes on despite all of these things happening.
A fun read with a bit of darkness that will make you laugh out loud while learning a bit about the Ancient Egyptians. Highly recommended but as always, better if read in order of events.

Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris
Sookie and Bill have broken up. She would like to see more of Alcide but that is complicated by Debbie Pelt. New Years brings a resolution to not get beaten up.
Then she finds Eric running down her road with no memory of who he is and Jason disappears. Her resolution is not looking to good.
Again, Sookie is much stronger in the books than the HBO show True Blood and I still like Eric best.
Fun read.

Skelton Key by Anthony Horowitz
Alex Rider, fourteen year old James Bond type, is called upon once again to investigate at Wimbledon followed by a trip to Cuba. Filled with action, gadgets, and even a bit of very early stages romance this novel will appeal to the reader that will one day read all about 007.
Suggested for the late elementary or middle school reader but will also appeal to the adult looking for a light read.

Evermore by Alyson Noel
Ever's family is killed in a car crash that changes her life. The usual, almost being killed, losing parents and sister, going to live with an aunt hundreds of miles away, hearing peoples thoughts and knowing things will happen before they do, normal stuff. Despite the sarcasm there this is a nicely fleshed out book. Although she makes some stupid decisions she also makes some good ones so it gets high marks on that front.
The first in a series that I think I will enjoy reading.

Witchlight by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Winter Musgrave knows something is wrong but has no idea how she got to where she is or why she is there. The dead animals, open doors, and the fear of outside just add to the stress of the mystery. She finally ventures out and gets help from Truth Jourdemayne and learns more about her past than expected but there are still many blank spots.
Her journey to sort out her past also takes her on a journey to find herself and her strength.
Witchlight follows the mystical theme often seen in books of the late 80s early 90s which is refreshing change from many current books. Read and enjoy.
